Bio
Jan has been painting since her childhood on a farm in northwest Ohio. After earning a BFA at Miami University in 1975, she was employed at Gibson Greetings and served in many capacities over about a 20 year time span. In following years, she trained with prominent national and area artists and enjoys associations with local art organizations.
Larger and more complicated paintings are often worked out in pastel studies, but Jan is attracted to the rich colors of oils and the old masters technique of building a painting in layers. Recurring subjects seem to fall into three categories that reflect Jan’s heart: Cincinnati landmarks that usually include people, Ohio farm scenes, and river paintings.
Her painting style has been described as ‘painterly realism’. Many images carry a narrative that may be sparked with wry humor that is sometimes reflected in the title.
Jan has won numerous awards and been accepted in juried exhibits in regional and national competitions. Corporate collections include Cincinnati Financial, Mercy of Fairfield, A-Peeling Fund Raising, Castellini Company, West Chester Medical Center and the Bethesda Foundation.
Jan taught drawing at Scarlet Oaks for a couple of terms, then started teaching oil painting at a private studio in Mason before bringing her classes to The Barn in 2008. She always sets up a still life for the class, but works with students individually on their own projects and at their own level. It seems that people do better when they paint subjects that hold personal meaning.
